A Hundred Million Miracles

October 15, 2019

There is a wonderful song in the musical, Flower Drum Song. A young woman sings of all the miracles that happen around us every day and how we do not recognize them as such. The chorus of this song is as follows:

A hundred million miracles
Are happening every day
And those who say they can’t agree
Are those who do not hear or see.

Each verse tells of some miracle that most of us take for granted. For example, all of nature is a miraculous mystery…bird eggs all the sudden have wings and eyes and beaks and legs; children keep growing, and rivers keep flowing. A poet finds beauty in a summer day and pens some words to express it, which are put to music and sung by a lovely human voice and shared with those who hear it

I love this song. It reminds me that there are countless reasons for me to be grateful and I need only to allow myself to see, hear, and enjoy them. These are troubled times and we need to guard against allowing the negativity to overshadow the miracles that surround us.

We have options. We can choose how much time we allow negative things to rent space in our brains. Of course, we must do whatever we can to help those in need, treat others with kindness, and care about what is going on in the world. But there are also many miracles that deserve our attention and our gratitude.
